Play Pickleball the Way It’s Meant to Be Played

A good pickleball club is judged on three things: court quality, how well the rules are explained to new players and how easy it is to book a slot. Pickle & Cue was built around all three. The courts are indoor and standard dimension, so the bounce and pace stay consistent whether you’re playing your first rally or competing in a club tournament, and every first time player gets a quick walkthrough of the rules before stepping on court.

Pickleball Court Layout and Dimensions

Every court at Pickle & Cue follows the official pickleball court layout, so the game a player learns here transfers directly to any tournament or outdoor court elsewhere. Here is the layout broken down:

NetKitchen — 7 ft44 ft20 ft
  • Court size: 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, the same dimensions for both singles and doubles play
  • Net height: 36 inches at the sidelines, 34 inches at the centre of the net
  • Non-volley zone (the kitchen): extends 7 feet from the net on each side, where volleying the ball is not allowed
  • Service courts: each side is divided into two service courts, split by a centreline running from the non-volley line to the baseline
  • Baseline to kitchen line: 15 feet of playing area behind the non-volley zone on each side, used for serves and groundstrokes
  • Surface: hard, indoor flooring at Pickle & Cue, which keeps ball bounce consistent through the year

Pickleball Rules Every Player Should Know

Pickleball rules are simple enough to explain in one sitting, which is part of why the sport is easy to pick up. The two rules that trip up most beginners are the serving rule and the double bounce rule, covered below in detail.

  • Scoring: games are typically played to 11 points, win by 2, with points scored only by the serving side
  • Faults: hitting the ball out of bounds, into the net or volleying from inside the kitchen results in a fault
  • Line calls: a ball landing on any line is considered in, except the non-volley zone line during a serve
  • Side switching: in doubles, the serving side alternates between the two players before the serve passes to the opponents

The Serving Rule

The serve is where every rally begins, and pickleball has specific requirements for how it must be played.

  • Underhand only: the paddle must contact the ball below waist height, with an upward swing path
  • Diagonal serve: the ball must be served diagonally into the opponent's service court, crossing the net and clearing the non-volley zone
  • Behind the baseline: the server's feet must stay behind the baseline at the point of contact
  • One attempt: each server gets a single attempt per turn, unless a let is called for a ball touching the net and still landing in
  • Server rotation: the serve moves between partners in doubles before passing to the receiving team

The Double Bounce Rule

The double bounce rule, also called the two-bounce rule, is what gives pickleball its distinct rhythm compared to tennis or badminton, and it's the rule coaches at Pickle & Cue spend the most time explaining to first time players.

  • First bounce: after the serve, the ball must bounce once on the receiving side before the receiver returns it
  • Second bounce: the return shot must also bounce once on the serving side before that team can play the ball
  • After both bounces: once the ball has bounced once on each side, either team can choose to volley the ball out of the air or let it bounce again
  • Why it matters: the rule prevents either side from rushing the net and smashing the very first shot, which keeps early rallies fair for both players

Tips for Beginners

Most players are comfortable with the pace of pickleball within their first hour on court, especially with a coach on hand to correct positioning early. A few habits make that first session smoother:

  • Stay out of the kitchen: avoid stepping into the non-volley zone unless the ball has already bounced
  • Keep the paddle up: a ready position at chest height helps with faster reaction on returns
  • Soft hands near the net: dinking, or gently arcing the ball into the kitchen, wins more points than hard smashes at beginner level
  • Watch the double bounce: wait for the second bounce before rushing forward after your first return
  • Ask for a walkthrough: every first time player at Pickle & Cue gets a short rules and paddle demo before playing
